TCP/IP Configuration: Windows 2000

  1. Click the My Network Places icon on your PC desktop. Click Properties. Right-click on Local Area Connection. Click Properties.

  2. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click Properties. This is an example of a private network: 192.168.1.X. In this example, the IP address 192.168.1.2 is used as the IP for the PC. The gateway is 192.168.1.1 and would be placed in the space marked Default Gateway. (IP numbers shown below are for example only.)

  3. DNS should be configured with the IP numbers provided in the IP Configuration Sheet mailed to you by DSL.net. (IP numbers shown below are for example only.)

  4. New feature for Windows 2000: after changing the IP-address, you are NO LONGER required to restart the system (like on Win95/98/Nt4). You can run IPCONFIG to check the change. (IP numbers shown below are for example only.)

  5. You may also perform an additional low-level check to verify that the network is working by using the ping command to test the connection to another system on the network. (In this example, we are pinging the router (Default Gateway) address.) (IP numbers shown below are for example only.)

  6. If the ping test is successful, your configuration is complete. If not, please check your TCP/IP settings or cables.
